It’s about last June (2011),
Senior Shang asked me to go for a field work in Yunnan and Sichuan of China two months later.
After few days consideration, I’m pleased agreed to this invitation!
Thanks Shang for asked me go together this time,
this trip may impact me significantly in whole life…
Before departure,
God-Fang wrote me a note and asked me to help him to pick tissue samples from these species if possible,
from top to bottom, they are Genus Acanthosaura, Genus Calotes and Genus Japalura, respectively.
Due to the research God-Fang is doing: Phylogeography of Japalura polygonata, except the samples from Taiwan and Ryukyu islands of the four subspecies of Japalura polygonata, we must include some species belong to the same Genus, even some close related Genus, as outgroups.
(Gonocephalus):
According to the report published by Honda et al (2000) in Zoological Society of Japan,
there’s five close related genera with Japalura in Agamidae.
In addition to Acanthosaura and Calotes mentioned above,
there are still Genus Gonocephalus:
(Aphaniotis):
Genus Aphaniotis:
(Phoxophrys):
and Genus Phoxophrys:
From these pictures above,
we can found that they might have a certain degree of relationship with Japalura due to the similar exterior.
By the way, Gonocephalus are so beautiful!
Yunnan and Sichuan just distributed by Japalura, Acanthosaura and Calotes,
okay, one more mission carried on,
let’s roll!
We arrived Taoyuan International Airport by bus,
had a Burger King breakfast,
wait for the plane…
Had a plate of noodle,
soon we arrived Hong Kong Airport,
we were wait for the flight to Kunming here…
The flight was delay,
after few hours wasted, we can finally boarding…
After we arrived Kunming Airport,
Mr. Yuan, one of the students of Dr. Rao,
lead us to the hotel we were going to stay these days and check in.
He spent few more hours for waiting us due to the flight delay,
thanks, Mr. Yuan!
After we put our luggage into our room,
we took a walk around the hotel, then went back for sleep…
Next morning we had a breakfast in the dining hall of the hotel.
Depart for Kunming Institute of Zoology,
it’s not so far from our hotel.
After we entered Dr. Rao’s lab,
there’s a Impressed tortoise (Manouria impressa) caught my eye!
This tortoise is hard to keep in Taiwan, but I suppose they might suitable to keep in Kunming which almost 2000 meters above sea level.
Andrias davidianus)!
Chinese giant salamander (Andrias davidianus)!
Our schedule in this trip did not include Chinese giant salamander,
maybe next time I’ll plan a trip for it in China again,
hope we will find it successfully just like the trip we went for Japanese giant salamander (Andrias davidianus) in Japan!
We took a bus to Flower & Bird Market.
The Pepsi's advertising has two Taiwanese XD
This market is selling some plants and animals,
sometimes we can found some local species…
We went to another Flower & Bird Market by bus again,
the way passing a period of downtown,
children can play water just right in the city center, pretty cool!
Taiwan bubble tea seems also famous in Kunming!
Through a tree-lined trail…
On a toilet, the public toilets are mostly need to pay in China…
We were there,
species number in this market was more than previous one…
(Cynops cyanurus)…
Blue-tailed fire-bellied newt (Cynops cyanurus)…
Stained animals are ugly, it’s dispiteous, too.
The “Tubifex-ball” was for feed those newts…
I don’t know what’s the purpose of these carabids…
(Amphiesma octolineata)…
Eight-lined keelback (Amphiesma octolineata)…
(Pyxidea mouhotii)…
Keeled box turtle (Pyxidea mouhotii)…
Indotestudo elongeta)…
Elongated tortoise (Indotestudo elongeta)…
(Tylototriton kweichowensis)…
Red-tailed knobby newt (Tylototriton kweichowensis)…
After we finished the visit of the Flower & Bird Market,
it’s lunch time, we found a place for lunch with local characteristics in downtown.
When we took a bus to one place for lizards,
on the road, we saw Yunnan Provincial Museum and Formosa Optical…
We arrived at the Institute of Botany and Kunming Botanical Garden,
took a walk and looking for lizards…
Then, it’s Black Dragon Pool…
We saw this on the way back to the Institute of Zoology,
An Huang is really popular there…
Dinner time!
One other student of Dr. Rao: Mr. Xiao was stay with us together,
he work in the Institute of Zoology after he graduated from there directly,
a youth from Wuhan!
The tableware there were almost casing like this before we use,
ensure it’s sanitary…
Few local dishes,
two seniors were meal together,
they are hired for field work by the Institute of Zoology,
I supposed they all with unique skills…
After the breakfast next morning,
we went to the Institute of Zoology again.
Kunming is a city still under development,
large-scale construction projects can be seen everywhere…
The lovely Impressed tortoise was eating a banana…
The work we should do today was specimen-survey,
it’s one of the main works for him to check the Reed snakes specimens this time to China.
Also, I asked Mr. Wang (he is one of the students of Dr. Rao, too! His job is to manage those specimens.) find some specimens of Pareatids for observation…
(Pelophylax nigromaculatus)…
Time for lunch again,
we went out for lunch with Wang together,
it’s double hotpot!
This restaurant kept some frogs for cook,
according to the guide book I have,
it’s Dark-spotted frog…
Mr. Wang, who giving the impression that nice and sincere!
We’ll going to Wuliangshan for field work next day,
so I asked two friends for co-photo,
it’s Mr. Yuan and Xiao-An (she had been to NTNU for short-term research)!
(Typhlops diardii)!
In the afternoon,
Shang checked one more interesting snake,
it’s Diard's blindsnake (Typhlops diardii)!
So big and so cute!
It’s dinner time,
Mr. Xiao took us for dinner again.
We had an extremely spicy fish,
we couldn’t finish it, but a large bottle of cola used to solve the spicy were finished quickly!
The next day was the day we starting the sampling trip.
We were arrived the gathering place after breakfast,
that’s roll with Hui, Wang and Ou-Yang!
Soil in Yunnan are basically brick red,
it’s should be related to the abundant rainfall…
The Dinosaur Valley is famous for the discovery of a large number of dinosaur fossils,
I'd like to be there one day!
Road control, suspend passage…
We had lunch after we left from the exit of highway,
the mushroom cuisine in Yunnan is also very famous,
we can see a wide variety of carpophores!
This is master Hui (Hong Hui),
employed by the Kunming Institute of Zoology as a professional field driver for almost three decades!
Few years after him, Dr. Rao entered the Institute of Zoology as a graduate student,
so he is the big brother of Dr. Rao basically!
BTW, he looks just like one of our professors: A-Xian :P
Here’s the mushroom dishes!
Refueling for the Big Green,
it’s strange that it’s forbidden to take pictures in the gas station…
We’re here to Dali!
The city of “The semi Gods and semi Devils”!
Wuliangshan belongs to the Hengduan mountains.
The Hengduan mountains are north-south direction which formed by the impact extrusion of the plate,
high mountains and deep valleys,
high biological diversity!
Species of the Hengduan mountains are actually quite related with which in Taiwan.
In southern China, the effect of the ice age caused the animals retreated to the mountains of eastern and western sides.
The eastern side was Taiwan, and the western side was the Hengduan mountains,
a very close relationship…
Then we talk about the Wuliangshan,

http://www.bioline.org.br/request?zr11099
The target species: the Cyrtodactylus bent-toed gecko (Cyrtodactylus wayakonei) was finally be found!
We found three individuals in a small area, it’s two females and one juvenile!
The Cyrtodactylus bent-toed gecko was the new species which has been published in Vietnam just one year ago (2010) before this trip,
presumably Dr. Rao must feel a pity…
However, Yuan and Dr. Rao have still publish a report about the discovery,
check this link if you are interested…

The following schedule was back to Kunming by car with 500 km.
To sell things on the roadside of the highway was pretty crazy…

Thanks for giving me this book, Dr. Rao :)
That night,
Dr. Rao set up a dinner party for us,
A very happy dinner!
It’s also my first time drink until a splitting headache and walk instability…
